"The internet has dramatically widened the number of available substitutes. You don’t have to like it, but it’s true. That means you have to work far harder to create work that can’t easily be replaced."

zatanna:

It pisses me off kind of that there’s such a horrible stigma towards downloading comics — but it’s ok to download MP3s, videos, movies, and even hundred dollar programs (oh hay photoshop).
I think this is a shady subject, but I stand my ground on it.

This post pretty much sums up a generation’s attitude to media (and this post shouldn’t be seen as me picking on Zatanna).

Content creation companies fight so hard on things like DRM and legislation precisely because of this. Because for every single person who buys a lot of stuff and downloads a little, there will be a lot more who just download everything and pay for nothing.

And the end result for the consumers and fans is: risk averse, low quality, formulaic, cheap rubbish.

There aren’t any easy fixes for this. People will always download stuff if they can. But the attitude that “it’s ok to download MP3s, videos, movies, and even hundred dollar programs (oh hay photoshop)” is probably the most frightening thing for whole industries. And as this attitude gets more prevalent, expect legislation to change accordingly (in favour of content creators).

madthoughts asked: I've paid for three mediocre webos tumblr apps. I think people would if it, y'know, worked and did what everyone expected it to do, I hate the iphone dashboard.

Hey thanks for the response.

I kind of have a love/hate thing going on with Tumblr at the moment - just the web site, never mind the crappy iPhone app.

If I can ever finish my current project (which erm… I am meant to be working on NOW), I will take a serious look at making a decent Tumblr app.

Ok Tumblr, You Win…

As you refuse to change to meet my needs, I am going to have to change the way I use you.

Blogs will be culled, new accounts created and whole lot of general faffing will take place.

Tumblr Apps

comicscavern:

“Oh, the app isn’t working for you? Or anyone?

Well have you tried hitting your iPhone really hard? OK, now slam your head against the wall.

Still nothing? Try holding a lighter under your nards for an hour, let us know how that works out.”

Out of interest, has anyone tried any unofficial Tumblr apps?

The idea of writing one for the iPad crosses my mind every so often… but I have no idea if anyone would pay for one, given the official one is free.
